FOUR-PART WEBINAR SERIES

Using Marine Shoreline Design Guidelines to improve shoreline stabilization permitting

Welcome to a four-part webinar series on the use of Marine Shoreline Design Guidelines (MSDG) technical information to improve review processes for shoreline stabilization projects on Puget Sound.

This webinar series covers the essential elements of MSDG, including an overview of shoreline environmental processes, site and risk assessment, and analysis of design alternatives. We also address shoreline stabilization in the context of sea level rise. This series provides actionable information and helpful materials to shoreline planners and project reviewers as they review shoreline stabilization proposals for consistency with local Shoreline Master Programs (SMPs).

WEBINAR 1

Background and Introduction
February 11, 2020, 9:30 - 11 a.m. PST
This webinar will review foundational concepts in coastal processes and biology, review the permitting environment for shoreline stabilization in Puget Sound, and provide a brief overview of design techniques. This will serve as the foundation for the following webinars.

WEBINAR 2

Site Assessments and Demonstration of Need/Risk Assessment
February 18, 2020, 9:30 - 11 a.m. PST
This webinar will cover the key elements of what to look for in a site assessment, and how to review a risk assessment. We will then discuss the demonstration of need requirement in SMPs and provide MSDG-based tools for use when reviewing geotechnical reports for SMP consistency.

WEBINAR 3

Shoreline Stabilization Techniques and Design Checklists

February 25, 2020, 9:30 - 11 a.m. PST

This webinar will provide a deeper dive on shoreline design techniques, ranging from passive management to hard armoring. We will provide MSDG-based resources for use when reviewing the analysis of design alternatives in project applications.

WEBINAR 4

Sea Level Rise and Shoreline Stabilization
March 3, 2020, 9:30 - 11 a.m. PST
Our final webinar will take a broader look at the best available sea level rise science for Washington and discuss resources available to local governments as they undertake planning efforts for sea level rise. We will specifically touch on the nexus between sea level rise and shoreline stabilization and discuss our current understanding of this complex issue, as well as knowledge gaps that may impact planning.
