The Habitat Strategic Initiative Lead sponsored a 2-part webinar highlighting the results of two of our grants that advance the Shoreline Armoring Implementation Strategy featuring Nicole Faghin and Cathy Angell.

Part 1: Training for Shoreline Planners and Contractors
Bulkheads and rip rap. It is estimated that over 700 miles of Washington’s marine shorelines contain hard structures to protect against erosion. As you are probably aware, many of these structures are causing serious damage to the environment. How can shoreline homeowners be motivated to take a softer approach and understand the alternatives that are available? One approach is to educate the people involved in designing, permitting, and building these projects.
In this webinar Nicole Faghin and Cathy Angell will share how they came up with a training plan for shoreline planners, consultants, and marine contractors. Who did they talk with? How did they get inside the heads of these three groups in order to understand what information would be most valuable to them? What two training classes did they start with and how were these classes received? These questions and more will be answered during this project review.
Part 2: Ways to Support the Shore Friendly Program
The Shore Friendly program at Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife provides support to individual Shore Friendly programs in 13 counties. These programs offer grant funding to shoreline homeowners on projects that remove bulkheads and implement soft shore stabilization methods. Washington Sea Grant (WSG) brought additional expertise and capacity to support the growth and coordination of this local-regional partnership. Through this grant, Washington Sea Grant staff were able to enhance and improve the overall Shore Friendly efforts in the region by:
● Developing a local shoreline planner’s workgroup,
● Collaborating on a monthly basis with British Columbia’s Green Shores program,
● Designing and facilitating a Shore Friendly Advisory Committee, and
● Exploring additional ways to provide regional support for the Shore Friendly program.
